The Storyteller at the Front Desk

Avery Lane Maxwell · 18 October 2026

Every keeper of a house is also a storyteller, whether they mean to be or not. The podcast that came out of that, and how to listen.

Every keeper of a house is also a storyteller, whether they mean to be or not. You hand people a key and a few sentences, and those sentences decide what the place will feel like. Which window has the best light. Where the trail starts. Why the board on the stairs is never fixed.

Avery Lane Maxwell kept front desks for nine years, and the stories began there, written down in the early mornings between arrivals. In time they became novels, and then they became something to listen to.

The podcast

The show is called Avery Lane Maxwell., from Galena House Audio. Essays read slowly, to one person at a time, each scored with original music written in the house, and each ending with a real recipe. Every episode is also a film: the words land on the screen the moment they are spoken.

Where to start

Begin with Still Here., No. 1: A Used Sunday, the first of five readings about Elias for the end of a long day. The other four follow from 26 to 29 October. The music under them, The Lamp On, is out on its own wherever you listen to music.

How to listen

Free, on the podcast’s own page with the films, and on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube, where the show is called Avery Lane Maxwell.

And if you keep a house yourself, the keeper’s book, Come In. It’s Already Warm., arrives on Thanksgiving Day.
